But to a very real extent, you have grown up in a different country than I have.

THIS.

re: #1 CuriousLurker

I was in my early 30’s before I really understood this. I was talking with my boss at the time, a white guy just a few years older than me. He was telling me how he had explained to his kids that if they were ever in trouble to find a cop, “you know, someone you can trust”. I thought to myself that never in a million years would I tell my children that they could trust a cop. I told the story to a co-worker, also a white guy around my age, and he looked at me like I was growing another head. It wasn’t really until that moment that I understood that their experiences with cops were much different than mine. Keep in mind, I was/am by no means a street guy. My own interactions with the police and those that I’ve seen taught me to always minimize my time with law enforcement.

I hear you. People sometimes get upset when minorities talk about “white privilege”. They seem to think it’s an insult or some sort of (personal) moral judgment. It’s not—it’s simply a fact of life for millions of Americans—it’s how things work and is largely invisible to those who benefit from it.

I kinda always knew about this stuff, but I never realized the extent of it. It’s sickening.
